Devoto prison

The Devoto prison (Spanish: Cárcel de Devoto), currently named "Complejo Penitenciario Federal de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires", may house 1811 inmates. It was built in 1927 as a prison for petty thieves, and was managed by the federal police. There was a prison riot in 1978, the "Motín de los colchones", which ended with 60 to 65 deaths and 85 injuries.[1]

President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced in 2011 that the prison would be closed, and the prisoners moved to a new one located in Mercedes, Buenos Aires. As of 2016, the works only advanced an 8%. It was announced then that the work would be restarted, and scheduled to finish in 2018. The prison in Mercedes was dropped in 2018, and a new one in Marcos Paz, Buenos Aires was announced instead.[1]
