DeepL Translator

The DeepL Translator is a free machine translation service launched in August 2017.[2][1] It has received positive press asserting that it is more accurate and nuanced than Google Translate.[3]

DeepL converts words directly between English and ten languages: Chinese (simplified), Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. Additionally, approximations of language equivalence are proposed among all of those languages, using a two-step process via an English pivot.

DeepL Translator was developed by DeepL GmbH based in Cologne, Germany.[2]

Reception

Reception of the DeepL Translator has been generally positive,[4][5] with TechCrunch appreciating it for the accuracy of its translations, stating that it was more accurate and nuanced than Google Translate,[3] and Le Monde thanking its developers for translating French text into more 'French-sounding' expressions.[6] A news article from the website of the Dutch television channel RTL Z stated that DeepL Translator "offers better translations […] when it comes to Dutch to English and vice versa".[7]

DeepL's own blind studies have given better results for its translator than Google Translate,[8] but independent measurements have not compared the two services yet.[9] DeepL Translator won the 2020 Webby Award for Best Practices in the category Apps, Mobile & Voice.[10] DeepL Translator won the 2020 Webby Award for Technical Achievement (Apps, Mobile, and Features) in the category Apps, Mobile & Voice.[10]

Sur un bref extrait d'une tribune, au style sobre d'un ministre, DeepL a également obtenu de meilleurs résultats que les autres services, grâce à des tournures de phrase plus « françaises » et en évitant un petit piège : les quatre autres ont traduit « to discuss these issues further » par « discuter de ces questions plus loin », ce qui n'est pas correct.
