After a first experience as a consultant, which he describes as "inconclusive", he went to Paris in 2000 to work as a journalist for Alternatives Économiques[6], he kept working there part-time, after he was elected to the Town Concil in the 2014 municipal election[7].

He's also a metropolitan advisor since the creation of the Metropole du Grand Paris in December 2015.

In March 2019, Belliard announced he wanted to run for mayor as the Green candidate in the 2020 municipal elections[11]. He won the nomination 1st of June 2019[12] by 49,61% of the party vote[13].
