Daughters of Glorious Jesus

Daughters of Glorious Jesus is a Ghanaian musical trio composed of women namely Cynthia Appiadu, Edna Sarpong and Monica Owusu Ansah. They are a gospel group who sing in English and Twi.[1] With over fifty songs still with strong appeal to audience, DoG-J has the most number of songs by a Ghanaian Gospel Artiste that is on the list of all time favourites. The group is known for its excellent three part harmony. Cynthia the lead vocalist is one of the best Soprano vocalists in Ghana with a wide vocal range. But she is not only good with the microphone, but also on the drum, and other traditional musical instruments. . Cynthia, who happens to be the youngest, writes and composes most of the songs of the group. The trio always appears on stage with a breath taking unpredictable craft. They have served as role models for other artistes that came after them, such as, Ohemaa Mercy, Noble Nketsiah, Willie and Mike, and Cee. DoG-J sings in both Twi and English. Their appearances on stages and in videos have been the most modest and graceful.

DoG-J only performs with live band on stage, and the best time to hear them is when they perform acappella. They are known for their funky style, and ability to fuse highlife with the western style of music very well. In 2019, the trio celebrated their 30th anniversary in ministry with a number of activities including a gala, concerts etc .[2]

History

The trio started as part of the choir of Resurrection Power and Living Bread Ministries then headed by the late Rev. Akwasi Amoako. Later, the General Overseer of the Church, Bishop Akwasi Asare Bediako, saw their potential and encouraged them to form a group. They proceeded to minister through songs at various church crusades and convention. In 1990, their first album ‘Anwanwa Din’ was released. In 1991, the group came out with ‘Mebo Yesu Din Daa’ which won them the Entertainment and Critics Association of Ghana (ECRAG), Best Gospel Group in 1992 and followed it up with a remix of their maiden album, ‘Anwanwa Din’ .. They followed it up with ‘Mesom Awurade Daa’ in 1994. This album won Cynthia the ECRAG, Best Female Vocalist Award in 1996. The group then came out with ‘Asomdwe Hene, and ‘Ngyae Mpae Bo Da’, which featured Edna as the lead vocalist.. In 2000, the hit album ‘Nea yehu’ was released. This album got the group nominations at the 2001 Ghana Music Awards, and 2003 Ghana Gospel Music Awards. In 2003, the evergreen Daughters of Glorious Jesus released their most successful album; ‘Aseda’ which had all eight tracks on it enjoying massive airplay. The album won the group at a ceremony in Accra the Our Music Award (OMA) for 2003. In 2004 ‘Aseda’ swept five Awards at the Ghana Music Awards, being the most awards to have been swept by a Gospel Artiste on one GMA night. It was also the first time a gospel artiste was picking any of the three topmost awards. With ‘Aseda’, the Daughters of Glorious Jesus took two awards at the 2004 Ghana Gospel Music Awards. The video for ‘Bebre’ won them the Best Gospel Video Award at the 2010 4syte Music Video awards. In 2007, the group came out with ‘Daughters’ Praise’ vol. 1 and 2, which comprised revised renditions of some of their old songs. In 2009, the much awaited classy ‘Trimude’ was released.

Achievements
