Dattu Baban Bhokanal

Dattu Baban Bhokanal[1] is an Indian rower who had qualified for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.[2][3][4] He qualified for the Olympics after winning a silver in the men's single sculls event at the FISA Asian and Oceania Olympic Qualification Regatta at Chung-ju in South Korea where he clocked 7 minutes and 07.63 seconds.[4] He is the only Indian rower to qualify for the Rio Olympics and is only the ninth rower to represent India in the Olympics.He won the gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games in Men's Quadruple sculls.[5][6]

Rowing career

He started rowing in 2012 at the Bombay Engineer Group & Centre (Khadki) Centre in Pune. In 2013, he shifted to Army Rowing Node (ARN), Pune for better training. His first coach was Kusrat Ali. Now he is trained under Dronacharya and chief National rowing coach Ismail Baig at the ARN, Pune.

Dattu is supported by the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme which funds Olympic medal prospects for their training and preparation. For Rio Olympic 2016, national camp held at ARN, Pune where Dr.Roshan Adkitte (MSPT) was his Sports Physiotherapist. Before Rio Olympic, Dr.Roshan Adkitte had treated his multiple sports injuries successfully. For guidance on training diet and supplements Dattu consulted Aradhana Sharma, sports nutritionist appointed by Mission Olympic Wing of Indian Army.
