Background

Danzhai is one of China’s most ethnically diverse regions, located in the province of Guizhou in Southwestern China. With a population of approximately 172,000, it sits administratively under the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. The region is renowned for its unique geographic, cultural and ethnic diversity, including the distinctive rice terraces, and Miao ethnic crafts and traditions.[1]

History

In 2014, the Wanda Group designated it as the site for its ‘Enterprise Sponsored County-wide Comprehensive Poverty Alleviation’ program.[2] Wanda Group has committed to invest 300 million yuan to a Danzhai vocational school, 500 million yuan for a Danzhai poverty alleviation fund, and 700 million yuan for a Danzhai Wanda Village, which includes a culturally sensitive hotel and town district built in the distinctive Miao architectural tradition.

Wanda Group’s total investments total 1.5 billion RMB and the tourism village is expected to provide up to an additional 3,000 jobs. Wanda will hire 50% graduates from the vocational school. The school has a enrollment of 404 as for September 2017. [3]

In July 2017, the village celebrates the grand opening. Wanda is planning to build more characteristic tourism villages for poverty alleviation.[4]

In June 2018, The Danzhai Wanda Village (the Wanda Village), and the University of Southern California on behalf of the Sol Price School of Public Policy (the USC Price School) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU).
