Daniel Templon

Daniel Templon is a French contemporary art dealer born in 1945.[1] In 1966, he founded his first contemporary art gallery in Paris.[2][3][4][5]

He declared that he got help from Leo Castelli in early 1970s."He trusted me and helped me to introduce the works of young American conceptualists and minimalists to Europe, such as Donald Judd, Richard Serra, etc. That was how the gallery became known in the early 1970s, which was a key moment in my career".[3]

He defines himself as a self taught "dealer in paintings" driven by instinct "when I first showed Warhol, Lichtenstein and Rauschenberg, now the great stars of Pop Art, in Paris the reception was lukewarm to say the least. But though I couldn't say why, I felt I'd made the right choice. It's been like that from the start of my career. I've organised 600 exhibitions and worked with nearly 300 artists I've chosen completely freely. I owe nothing to anyone except the artists. They trust me and I have to honour that trust."[4]

In 1972, he co-founded the bilingual contemporary art magazine art press with his partner art critic and erotic biographer Catherine Millet.[6] He then co founded Art Studio magazine with Ann Hindry in 1986.[7]

He opened a gallery in Milan between 1972 and 1976 and closed it in 1976 due to the crisis.[3]

In 2013, Templon expanded his gallery to Brussels, managed by his son Mathieu Templon.[3][4][8][7]

His gallery is regularly participating to art fairs such as Art Basel, Armory show or Fiac.[9][10] In 2016 the gallery was listed number 8 in Le Journal des Arts.
