Dan Reinstein

Dan Z. Reinstein is a specialist ophthalmic surgeon in the UK and is a board-certified registered specialist ophthalmologist in the US, Canada and the UK, specialising in the field of refractive surgery (vision correction). He is medical director of the London Vision Clinic and a voluntary faculty member as Professor of Ophthalmology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons[1] as well as a Visiting Professor at the University of Ulster, UK[2] and Professeur Associé at the Faculty of Medicine, Sorbonne Université, Paris, France.

Education and early career

Reinstein was educated at Leighton Park School before completing his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Cambridge. His postgraduate qualifications include M.A.(Cantab), M.B. B.Chir and MD degrees. He undertook extensive post-doctorate fellowship sub-specialty training in refractive surgery, having completed a Research Fellowship in Ophthalmic Epidemiology (UCL Institute of Ophthalmology/Moorfields Eye Hospital, UCL Medical School, London 1991), a Fellowship in Ophthalmic Bioengineering (Weill Cornell Medical College of Cornell University, New York 1994), his Residency in Ophthalmology (Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York 1996), a Refractive Surgical Fellowship as the Paul Kaiser Scholar for 1997 (under laser eye surgeons Roberto Zaldivar, Maria-Clara Arbelaez, Alberto Chacon, and Jose Barraquer) and held the position of Fellow in Cornea, External Disease and Refractive Surgery at the University of British Columbia, Canada from 1997-1999. Professor Reinstein is recognized by three major sub-specialty bodies: he is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) (FRCSC), Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of the United Kingdom (FRCOphth), and is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (DABO). He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (FAAO) and a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO).

Medical Career and Research

Reinstein is an ophthalmologist and research scientist in the field of laser eye surgery, therapeutic refractive surgery (corneal complex refractive surgery) and vision correction. As of January 2020, Expertscape determined Reinstein to be the top-rated expert in Corneal Surgery, Laser in the world[3], calculated to be in the top 0.017% of 5,768 published authors worldwide on Laser Corneal Surgery.[4][5]

During several years of research in ultrasound bioengineering at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University Reinstein led the development of the Artemis VHF digital ultrasound technology, - a diagnostic tool for measuring and studying the individual corneal layers as well as ocular dimensions of the anterior segment with one micrometre precision.[6][7][8][9][10][11] He has pioneered the application of the Artemis technology to the understanding of LASIK safety and accuracy. He developed Laser blended vision - the LASIK treatment for presbyopia (ageing eyes) now distributed as by Carl Zeiss AG in their MEL80 laser platform.[12][13][14] Reinstein has also developed new algorithms for the safe treatment of very high refractive error by LASIK. He has joint patents,[15][16] with Carl Zeiss Meditec, being closely involved in developing a procedure called Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (ReLEx SMILE) that uses the VisuMax femtosecond laser to create a refractive lenticule within the stroma which is then removed through a small incision (http://www.meditec.zeiss.com/relex).[17] In 2006, Reinstein together with Cynthia Roberts instigated and headed the Biomechanics Section of the Journal of Refractive Surgery.[18] for which he served as Section editor for 10 years. Reinstein claims to be one of the world's foremost authorities on Therapeutic Refractive Surgery, the diagnosis and treatment of complications of refractive surgery. He is the Therapeutic Refractive Surgery Section Editor for the Journal of Refractive Surgery.[19][20]

Reinstein has published over 165 articles in peer reviewed medical journals[21], contributed to or written over 40 book chapters / published proceedings, over 150 articles for the Ophthalmic Press, and one textbook.[17] He was awarded the Waring Medal in 2006[22] and received the Kritzinger Award in 2013.[23] He is also heavily involved with teaching in his university roles with Ulster University, Columbia University, and the Sorbonne University. In particular, he contributed 29 lectures to the Postgraduate Diploma in Cataract and Refractive Surgery (Theory) at Ulster University.[24] He also runs a biannual 4-day training course in LASIK, presbyopia correction, and SMILE,[25] all of the profits of which are put towards the non-profit work done in Nepal by the London Vision Clinic Foundation.[26][27]

Reinstein's specialist interest in vision correction surgery includes LASIK, PRK / LASEK, ReLEx SMILE and phakic IOLs for the correction of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia. Reinstein developed the first method of examining the individual layers of the cornea with micronic precision in 3D with VHF digital ultrasound and initiated the field of studying corneal epithelial dynamics in corneal refractive surgery,[6][28][29] now an accepted and much used body of knowledge for the preoperative screening diagnosis of keratoconus[30][31][32] and the analysis of the complications of refractive surgery.[33][34][35][36][37] He has been the lead consultant since 2001 to Carl Zeiss Meditec, for whom he developed Presbyond Laser Blended Vision for treating presbyopia[12][13][14] and has contributed to the development of ReLEx SMILE – a new keyhole based corneal laser eye surgery method.[17]

Television appearances

Reinstein has appeared on television as the eye laser specialist, including on Extreme Makeover UK, 10 Years Younger (UK), BBC Breakfast, Sky News, and BBC Radio 4. He appeared on This Morning on ITV for his Laser blended vision technique which was subsequently performed live on presenter Phillip Schofield. The Times, The Sunday Times Magazine and The Evening Standard have featured him as an expert in laser eye surgery.

Personal life

Married to Austrian veterinarian and researcher Ursula Reinstein (née Heczko), they have three children and live in central London. He is medical director of the London Vision Clinic.[38]
