Gameplay

Players take control of the characters of Crash and Coco Bandicoot in order to traverse levels and reach the goal of the stage.[8] Traditional elements of the series return, including various traps and obstacles to overcome, enemies that can be defeated in certain manners (such as jumping on them), and boxes that can be smashed open for items, some of which act as checkpoints that players restart at when their character dies. Unlike previous entries, players can switch between Crash and Coco at anytime during a level, with both having the same moveset as each other, and can make use of four different special masks to overcome more complex problems—an example is a mask that allows players to slow down time. At times, players can also control Doctor Neo Cortex, the game's antagonist, in order to traverse levels, making use of gadgets to overcome traps and obstacles.[8]

Plot

Cortex, Dr. N. Tropy and Uka Uka escape from their space-time prison and create a rip in the fabric of time; in doing so, they expose a multiverse. Crash and Coco must unite and work with the four Quantum Masks to avert the crisis and restore order to the multiverse.[5]

Development

The game was first teased on June 18, 2020, when several reporters were sent a jigsaw puzzle that revealed a new, mysterious mask character. The following day, a Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee filed a rating for the game, revealing the title, box art, a short plot synopsis and the game's developer, Toys for Bob.[9] The game, which utilizes the Unreal Engine, was then officially announced during the Summer Games Fest on June 22.[10][11]
