Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis is a common cause of the bacterial livestock disease caseous lymphadenitis which occurs in sheep, goats, cattle, buffalo and horses.[1] C. pseudotuberculosis is a gram-positive, oxygen requiring (facultative aerobic) bacteria that lives in soil and is transmitted via flies. This bacteria exhibits limited susceptibility to current antibiotic treatments which makes treating infections caused by the bacteria difficult.[2]

The bacteria exhibits a capacity for jumping between different host species (host switching). The ability to jump between hosts has been linked to the bacteria's rapid evolution and genomic flexibility.[3][4] Vaccines for the bacterial strains that infect sheep are currently commercially available and use of the vaccine is reported to decrease disease severity;[5] however, vaccines responsible for infecting other strains are still not widely available.
