It was founded as Beverley Central School in 1931, a reference to its size rather than its location,[2] and changed its name to Beverley School for Boys after the Second World War; the name being derived from the nearby Beverley Brook. The name was later amended to Beverley Boys' School before becoming Coombe Boys' School when it federated with Coombe Girls' School in 2006.

The executive headteacher is Deborah Walls.[3] Since September 2015, David Smith has been the headteacher of the school.

The school underwent a £7m improvement programme around 2008–9, including a new arts and technology building and a new assembly hall and canteen.[4]

Coombe Boys has a standard intake of 180 students per year.

The school has links with King's College School, a local independent school, through a leading edge partnership.[5]

The school also has strong links with Fulham FC, which has its training ground very near by. Three recent Fulham players, Ryan Sessegnon, Steven Sessegnon and Harvey Elliott were all pupils at the school.

The school won the English School's FA PlayStation Schools’ Cup for football two years running, in 2014 and 2015.[6]

Coombe Federation

The school federated with Coombe Girls’ School in 2006 to form the Coombe Secondary Schools Federation. The schools have the same governing body and executive headteacher and converted to academy status in February 2012.[5]

The Coombe Boys’ School sixth form is a joint sixth form with Coombe Girls’ School. Coombe Boys has a very strong record of success in BTECs in the 6th Form. For example, in 2019 "with over 80% achieving the highest grades of Distinction */ Distinction."

Ofsted Report

The school was inspected by OFSTED in December 2013 and again, in a short inspection, in 2018. The overall inspection rating for Coombe Boys’ School on both occasions was ‘Good’.

In 2013, it was rated ‘Outstanding’ for Leadership and Management and ‘Good’ in ‘Achievement of Pupils’, the ‘Quality of Teaching’ and the ‘Behaviour and Safety of Pupils’.[7]

In 2018, Ofsted commented that: "The latest GCSE results show that the school has maintained above-average attainment in English and mathematics" and: "In the sixth form, vocational results are exceptionally strong."
