Plot

The film opens with the suicide of Zhang Dong Ling and then tells, in reverse chronological order, the story of three key incidents from his life leading up to the fateful decision.[2] Each of the three segments draws from a different genre: the first segment is a science fiction story set in a dystopian vision of the year 2049, the second a film noir segment focusing on Zhang's earlier job as a police officer, and the third a melodrama about Zhang's childhood encounter with a local organized crime boss.[1]

Zhang is portrayed by Jack Kao in the first segment, Lee Hong-chi in the second, and Hsieh Chang-Ying in the third.[2] The cast also includes Huang Lu and Louise Grinberg.

Production

Cities of Last Things is a co-production of companies from Taiwan, China, France and the United States.
