Personal life

Rosales-Birou is a native of Phoenix, Arizona. He has stated that he grew up in both Arizona and Florida. In 2012, he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. He has also mentioned that he lived in Florida at some time.

In adolescence, Rosales-Birou developed a fear of roller coasters after Disneyland's Big Thunder Mountain derailing that killed two people aboard the train, claiming to have been on the attraction earlier in the day, and that he had planned to ride it again.[4] He has mentioned in videos that he struggled with family and financial issues during his childhood, as well as with autism.[5] For a short period of time, he believed he was misdiagnosed.[6] However, he later backed down from that statement, having no evidence to disprove it.[7] He has spoken many times of not having a healthy relationship with his father, citing drug use, alcoholism, and neglectfulness.[8]

Rosales-Birou later founded the collaborative Let's Play channel TheRunawayGuys, consisting mainly of himself, Jonathan "ProtonJon" Wheeler, and Timothy "'NintendoCapriSun" Bishop (with additional guest appearances from other Youtubers).[9]

Rosales-Birou has been friends with fellow content creator Stephen Georg, who also serves as his graphic designer, since he was 14 years old.[10] In the midst of Hurricane Florence in September 2018, Rosales invited Georg and family to stay with him as they rode out the storm.[11]

YouTube career

Rosales-Birou joined YouTube, just a year after the site was founded, on July 26, 2006 at the age of 16 as "Chuggaaconroy",[12] a name he has used as an online pseudonym since he was a child.[3]

On March 26, 2008, he began posting his Let's Play of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System RPG EarthBound. He has since produced 43 solo Let's Plays, and his content has been cited as a family-friendly alternative to more vulgar Let's Players, as well as being cited as one of the most influential.[13] In an interview with Wired, it was claimed that whenever he would curse he would receive "concerned letters from the parents of younger viewers."[1]

Early in his video-making career, Rosales-Birou notoriously neglected revealing his face (with the exception of update vlogs early in his channel's history, which were removed) until TheSpeedGamers' 2010 charity stream, in which he removed the silver mask he wore as a donation-incentive.[14]

In July 2010, Rosales-Birou's account was suspended under false copyright claims, though it was restored in late August.[15]

Currently, all of Rosales-Birou's main Let's Plays have been played on a Nintendo console. Of these, Ōkami, Ōkamiden, Sonic Colors, and Chrono Trigger are the only ones not based on any Nintendo-owned IPs. In 2014, Rosales-Birou underwent medical treatment for a bronchial infection, forcing him to take 4 months off; consequently, his then-current playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles became his longest in terms of release timeframe, lasting from June 2014 until June 2015.[16][17]At 119 episodes, it is also his longest Let's Play by episode count. His inaugural Let's Play of EarthBound is so far the first and only game Rosales-Birou has Let's Played twice (once in 2008, and again in 2018), the second instance coinciding with the tenth anniversary of his channel.[18][19]
