Cheryl de la Rey

Cheryl Merle de la Rey is a South African academic. She was the vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Pretoria in South Africa.[3][1] She is the vice-chancellor of the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. [4]

Life

De la Rey obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1983, Bachelor of Arts Honours in 1984 and Master of Arts in 1986 from the University of Natal, all cum laude.[5] She obtained her PhD in psychology from the University of Cape Town in 1999.[1]

She was installed as vice-chancellor in November 2009, replacing Calie Pistorius.[6] She is a qualified psychologist and was previously deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Town as well as Chief Executive Officer of the Council on Higher Education (CHE).[7]

Research

In the early twenty-first century, de la Rey's research focussed on race and gender,[8] especially the construction of gender and gender-based violence.[9]
