Chartered Mathematician

Chartered Mathematician (CMath) is a professional qualification in mathematics awarded to professional practicing mathematicians by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) in the United Kingdom.

Achieving Chartered status in any profession denotes to the wider community a high level of specialised subject knowledge and professional competence. Chartered Mathematician is considered to be equal in status to Chartered Scientist, which the IMA also awards as a member of the Science Council UK.

The required standard[1] for Chartered Mathematician registration is an IMA-accredited UK MMath degree (or equivalent), at least five years of postgraduate work experience in the application of mathematics, attainment of a suitable level of professional standing, and an ongoing commitment to Continuing Professional Development.

A Chartered Mathematician is allowed to use the post-nominal letters CMath. Being a Chartered Mathematician is considered a "regulated profession" under the European professional qualification directives[2].
