History

Coaster service began on February 27, 1995.

On October 7, 2013, the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner began stopping at four Coaster stations: Carlsbad Village, Carlsbad Poinsettia, Encinitas, and Sorrento Valley.[1] Amtrak dropped service to Carlsbad Poinsettia and Encinitas on October 9, 2017 due to low ridership.[2]

Construction on a $34 million renovation of the station began in May 2018.[3] The platforms were lengthened to 1,000 feet (300 m) and raised for accessibility. A pedestrian underpass was constructed and fencing was placed between the tracks, allowing two trains to pass through the station at one time. The project was completed in February 2020.[4]
