Cahya Mata Sarawak literally means "the light of Sarawak's eye" in the Malay language or "Cahya Mata" also figuratively means "the child of".

Early Beginnings and cement production

CMSB has evolved from a single product manufacturer of ordinary Portland cement beginning in 1974 to become a diversified corporation.

The company's portfolio has since grown into more than 35 companies involved in cement manufacturing, construction materials, trading, construction, road maintenance, property development, financial services, smelting, telco infrastructure, education and other services.

Cement manufacturing remains CMSB's core business; undertaken by its wholly owned subsidiary CMS Cement Sdn Bhd.

In 1974, CMSB was incorporated as Cement Manufacturing Sarawak. Throughout these years, the company has experiencing the cement productions until it was known as well-diversified cement company.

In 1996, Cement Manufacturing Sarawak has changed its name to Cahya Mata Sarawak when it starts to looking beyond the cement manufacturing as it start to providing other services such as construction materials, technology via telco infrastructure, education and road maintanance and joins other construction companies with the acquisition of PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd from Sarawak Economic Development Corporarion (SEDC) and the establishment of CMS Works Sdn Bhd.

Construction

PPPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (PPESW) is the construction company of CMSB. Like other contractor companies, it was established as a humble construction company. In the late 20th century, CMSB acquires PPESW and making PPESW as one of its core company. It is one of the company's core business. Few years later, another CMSB's construction company, CMS Works Sdn Bhd was established.

It has involving in both civil and private projects, including CMSB's headquarters Wisma Mahmud and Sarawak State Museum.

Roads and highway project

CMSB has been a main contractor for highway projects in Sarawak, including road maintenance. It is also one of the company's core business. CMSB's main figures of this section is PPES Works (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd (PPESW), CMS Roads Sdn Bhd, CMS Pavement Tech Sdn Bhd and CMS Premix Sdn Bhd.

Currently, CMSB through PPESW sets up a joint venture (JV) with BinaPuri Sdn Bhd (BPSB) for Sg. Awik - Bintangor Junction via associate company, PPESW BPSB JV Sdn Bhd. It was one of the 11 Pan Borneo highway work packages and the length of the highway is 64.48 km (40.07 mi).
