Brian Molefe

Molefe was appointed as the CEO of Transnet in February 2011,[1] and as the CEO of Eskom in April 2015.[2]

In November 2016 he dramatically resigned from Eskom after being implicated in Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's state capture report, and due to his close links to the controversial Gupta Family.[3][4]

Molefe received a controversial R30-million payment from the Eskom Pension Fund,[5][6]despite only having been at the power utility for 18 months.[7]In January 2018, a High Court ordered Molefe to pay back part of the R30-million.[8][9]

He previously also led the Public Investment Corporation [10]and has held senior positions at the National Treasury.[11]

In January 2017 Molefe was sworn in as a member of Parliament.[12]

He resigned from the legislature in May 2017.[13][14]

In late 2017, Molefe was called up to assist the defence force with auditing queries. The rank of Colonel was controversially given. Moelfe has been an honorary colonel of the part time reserve South African Irish Regiment since 2009.[15][16][17]

Brian Molefe has had several careers[18].

Controversy

Due to numerous irregularities during Molefe’s time at the helm of State Owned Enterprises Eskom and Transnet, as well as his known close relationship with the controversial Gupta Family, Molefe has been implicated in state capture at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry and stands accused of corruption, money-laundering and racketeering.[19][20][21]

He is currently under investigation by The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).[22]
