About

The Boxley House is a six-bedroom antebellum mansion in Madison. Part of the house was built prior to the Town of Madison's founding in 1815. The mansion is 5,773 square feet, and the kitchen wing was built in 1785 for Peter Scales, the father of Madison founder Randal Duke Scales. The property had previously been owned by Edmund Brewer. In the 1820s the owner of Boxwoods, William Hegwood, added on to the house.[1] In the 1840s more additions were made.[2] The south facing porch and columns were added in the late 19th century by Pleasant Black.[1]

In 2006, after a restoration in 2005, Boxwoods was reopened as a bed and breakfast.[1] It now operates as a wedding venue.[3]
