Background and release

Aja first came to international recognition when they were announced as a competitor on the ninth season of the drag reality competition show RuPaul's Drag Race in 2017. Aja eventually placed ninth in the competition after competing in seven episodes and sending home Kimora Blac in a lip-sync for your life, before being eliminated by Nina Bo'nina Brown. Later that same year, Aja was announced as one of the competitors on the third season of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, which premiered in January 2018. Despite being underestimated by their fellow contestants as the youngest drag performer in the cast, Aja won the season's first challenge alongside BenDeLaCreme and lip synced for their legacy; they also performed well impersonating Crystal LaBeija in the Snatch Game. BeBe Zahara Benet eliminated Aja in the fifth episode of the season, leading them to place seventh overall.

After their two appearances on Drag Race, Aja turned their attention to music and released several singles, culminating in the eventual release of their debut extended play, In My Feelings in May 2018.[6][7] In December of that year, Aja released "Jekyll & Hyde" which was later revealed as the lead single from their debut studio album. BOX Office was eventually released by Aja independently in February 2019. Prior to the album's release, Aja announced they no longer wished to be known as a drag queen, instead focusing on their career as a rapper and entertainer.[8]
