Barua festivals

Barua festivals are festivals put on by members of the Barua caste. Hinduism influenced the Baruas' social life, with Buddhism declining among newer generations, especially in India where most of the younger generation participates in Hindu festivals and pujas.

In Bangladesh, although old traditions have been maintained to an extent, Islam has had a visible influence on the language and culture. The main festivals are:

  • Buddha Purnima
  • Arahanth Sīvali Puja
  • Madhu Purnima
  • Kothin chibor Dana
  • Sangha dana & Atthaparikkhara Dana
  • Fanos-bazi
  • Chhadang
  • Dikkha or Pabbajja or shooni etc.

Other social festivals are adopted mostly from Hindu society and are now embedded in Barua customs.

Childbirth

On the occasion of a newly born child, the following ceremonies are undertaken:

  • Anno Prason.(Bhath-Suani).
  • Hulu Dhani only female members.
  • Panchaila prarthana (prayer to Lord Buddha) and do Vandana (Prayer to Monk) to the present Bhikkhu Sangha.

Marriage
  • Ashirbad
  • Bostra-Alonkar Chorani,
  • Pan-Mita,
  • Jorani Bhat,
  • Pan-Salla,
  • Tele-Chorani,
  • Boron Khula,tel-loai",
  • Panchaila prarthana (prayer to Lord Buddha) and doVandana (Prayer to Monk) to the present Bhikkhu Sangha.
  • Hulu Dhani only female members,
  • Borjatri,
  • Ferajatra etc

Pregnancy
  • Sadh Bhakhon
  • Hulu Dhani (only females)

Funeral
  • "Offering of cloth on behalf of the dead (mataka-vastra-puja)
  • burning the dead body.
  • "Preaching for the benefit of the dead (mataka-bana)
  • "Offering in the name of the dead" (mataka-dana) (/ Pindi dan) etc.
