Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery

Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (B.H.M.S.) is an undergraduate degree programme in homeopathy[1] awarded upon graduation from medical school by universities in Pakistan,[2] India,[3][4] and Bangladesh.[5][6]

The course allows students to choose any specialization, such as Homeopathic Pharmacy, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Skin Specialist or Infertility.

In India

Eligibility
  • 10+2 with a minimum of 50% or equivalent level examination with Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and English.
  • Minimum age is 17 years.
  • Admission to the BHMS is depends on merit. In a few states, there is a Joint Entrance Examination like the NEET for BHMS, alongside the MBBS and BDS tests.

NEET, KEAM, TS EAMCET, AP EAMCET, and PU CET are entrance exams for BHMS.[7]

Employment

It has been reported that homeopathic doctors are facing an unemployment problem. In 2017, the students' union stated that the Assam Public Service Commission has not appointed even one medical officer (homoeopathy) since the BHMS began in the mid-90s.[9]

A rising number of people in India are preferring to use homeopathic medicines over conventional medicines, despite there being no good evidence that it works.[10] Most homeopathic doctors open private clinics or work in a multi-speciality chain of homeopathic clinics.

Criticism

Homeopathy is a pseudoscience and its remedies are no more effective than placebos.[11][12][13][14]
