August Becker (painter)

August Becker (27 January 1821 – 19 December 1887) was a German landscape painter.

Biography

Becker was born in Darmstadt, where he studied under Schilbach, and afterwards at Düsseldorf, and in 1844 traveled in Norway, Switzerland, the Tyrol, and the Scottish Highlands. At Balmoral he instructed the British princesses in landscape painting. His pictures of mountain scenery are particularly valued; they include: “Evening in the Bernese Oberland” (1860 and 1867); “Norwegian Tableland” (1861); and “The Kaisergebirge in the Tyrol” (1864). He died in Düsseldorf.

He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting.
