Appian sells a Platform as a Service for building enterprise software applications. It is a leader in the Low-Code Development,[2] Business process management,[3] and Case Management[4] markets.

Appian was named the 2018 Washington D.C. area "Top Workplace" by The Washington Post.[5]

History

Appian was founded in 1999 by Matthew Calkins with co-founders Michael Beckley, Marc Wilson, and Robert Kramer.

In 2001, Appian developed Army Knowledge Online.[6] At the time, it was regarded as “the world's largest intranet".[7]

In 2004, Appian released Appian Enterprise, its first Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) software platform.[8]

In 2014, Appian received $37.5 million in secondary investments from New Enterprise Associates.[9]

By 2016, Appian's software platform had evolved to include broader aspects of application development with a focus on low-code development.[10]

On May 25, 2017, Appian became a publicly-traded company, trading under the symbol APPN on the NASDAQ Global Exchange[11][12]

In 2018, Appian announced it will move its headquarters to Tysons, Virginia[13][14]

On January 7, 2020, Appian announced that it acquired Novayre Solutions SL, developer of the Jidoka RPA platform.[15] In March, the company launched a health management app to help other businesses track workforce health and safety during the COVID-19 pandemic, by collecting information from employees and storing it in a HIPAA-compliant cloud.[16]
