Apachekolos tenuipes

Apachekolos tenuipes is a species of robber flies in the family Asilidae.[1][2]

Identification:

Head: Face entirely with white pile continuing behind eyes. Moustache (mystax) has white hairs.

Antenna: Very short, base reddish-brown, tips black.

Thorax: Reddish, covered with thin whitish pile. Top of thorax has 3 black stripes down middle.

Wings: Clear, base darker. Veins black. Halteres pale yellow, the knobs darkening.

Legs: Long and thin; yellowish-brown, darker on underside. Hind legs extremely long with spines at tip of shin (tibiae). Feet darker.

Abdomen: Very long and thin; brown, May have some pale pile on sides. Female abdomen tip pointed.

Size: 9 to 10 mm long.

Habitat: Dry woods.

Flight Time: June to September

Holotype as Leptogaster tenuipes male by Loew, 1821. Type Locality: District of Columbia. In the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard, Cambridge, Massachusetts, along with female allotype.
