Ambar Das

Ambar Das (born 10 March 1974) is a music composer, producer,[1] drummer[2][3] and guitarist from Guwahati, India. He has worked in musical bands and composed scores for serials, documentaries and films. He also composed ad jingles.

Early life

Ambar Das was born on 10 March 1974 in [[Bharalumukh]], [[Guwahati]]. His father is the late Bholanath Das, who was a scholar and an Undersecretary of education to the govt of Assam. His mother is the late Sailabala Das who was a singer and lyricist.

Ambar Das is based in Mumbai with his wife singer Sarmistha Chakravorty with their son Zion.

Ambar Das studied at Nichols English School Guwahati, Chatribari and Happy Child High school, in Rehabari. He attended [[Cotton University]] in Guwahati and did Masters in English Literature.

Music

Ambar studied music and compositions with Jiten Baruah, who was a pioneer in bringing western orchestration into Assamese music. He learnt the drums and other percussion from elder brother Bhaskar Das. He later further learned some nitty-gritties of drumming under Jurgen Busse, a jazz drummer and music teacher from Hamburg, Germany. He learned the guitar and the nuances of music arrangements from Rana Roy, the lead guitarist of the fusion band ‘Karma’ of Kolkata.

Ambar Das has been a part of bands such as: Soulmate Band (Shillong, Meghalaya), Faith (Mumbai), Voodoo Child (Assam), Band of Brothers (an Indo/German fusion band), Crystal Ann (Assam), Monthsmind (Assam), Chocolates N Ciggerretes (Assam/Hyderabad), East India Company (Delhi) and Warklung (A Karbi progressive folk/fusion band). Later he joined awar@aj, Floating Boots Collective (a band composed of artists from various genres and countries) and The Mumbai Mariachis (an Indo-Australian Gypsy Jazz band) Retro Inc, Melange etc . He has been actively involved in the regional music scene and has accompanied artists such as Bhupen Hazarika Zubin Garg (Ya Ali), Angarag (Papon) Mahanta and Santa Uzir. As a music producer, he worked with artists such as Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, and Sukhwinder Singh.

Discography

Ambar Das entered into professional music first as a stage musician and accompanist in percussion and guitar in 1985. He moved on to professional music arrangement and programming in 1998 with his first album Porisoy Bihin, sung by Assamese artists. He later made 72 other albums. He has worked for feature films, television and jingles as a composer and programmer.

Background music and Jingles

Das scored music for serials and documentaries for Discovery, BBC, National Geographic, DDK, PPC, NETV, RONG, Newslive, Zee TV, Zee 5, UTV Bindas, Sony, Colors, Star Plus and Star World. he scored the background and title music for Zee 5 series The Final Call (TV series) featuring Arjun Rampal. And the BGM for Rangbaaz (web series).

As a jingle composer, he made music for major brands such as Standard Chartered Bank, Louis Philippe, Adidas, Lufthansa, Nestle, Incredidible India, Skill India, Hindustan Unilever Limited, Dabur, Haier, LG, Onida, Ford, Citibank, Tvs motors, Hero Honda, Myntra, Intel, ICICI, Google, Patanjali, Dominos and Shopclues etc.

He scored the Indian adaptation of the play An Inspector Calls, written by English dramatist J. B. Priestley and A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams. He along with his partner Sanjoy Dazz served as the music producer for the following Hindi adaptations of Henrik Ibsen's plays. Peer Gynt. It's called Pir Ghani and is written by Ila Arun and directed by KK Raina. Ghosts as ‘Peechha Karti Parchhaiyan’, ‘Hedda Gabler’, or ‘Hardeep Kaur Gill’, and American playwright Tammy Ryan’s ‘Baby’s Blues’.

Ambar worked as a music supervisor and sound recordist for the following Assamese films:
