Altéo

RATP Class Z 1500 "Altéo" is a type of double-decker, dual-voltage electric multiple units operated on the French RER A line. These trains have been built by GEC Alstom and ANF (Bombardier France). The Altéo is also known as the RATP version of the MI 2N.

MI 2N RATP Altéo looks very similar to SNCF Class Z 22500 trains, but many differences exist between these models, such as motorization and design of inner spaces.

History

Renovations

From 2019 on, the 43 MI 2N Altéo trains will undergo a renovation programme including the modernisation of the cars' interior (replacement of seats and floor coatings, lightning, arrangement of multi-purpose areas), the installation of a video surveillance system, the improvement of accessibility for passengers with reduced mobility (additional of a call button for passengers in wheelchairs and improved loudspeaker system) and the improvement of the on-board passenger information system.[1] This renovation programme, managed by RATP and co-financed by RATP and Île-de-France Mobilités (IDFM), represents a total investment of 134 million euros.[1] After renovation, the trains will also have a new external livery in the IDFM colours (grey, white and light blue).[1] RATP has subcontracted the realisation of this renovation programme to CAF.[2][3] The first renovated trains are expected to enter revenue service in 2020.[2][3]

Description

As dual-voltage units, Altéos are able to operate on 1500 V DC or 25 kV AC electrical networks, because this is the case on the RER A line, which uses the two networks (RFF/SNCF from Cergy-le-Haut and Poissy to Nanterre-Préfecture - 25 kV AC, RATP from Nanterre-Préfecture to Marne-la-Vallée, Boissy-Saint-Léger and Saint-Germain-en-Laye - 1500 V DC).

Altéos made their commercial debut on June 6, 1997. 43 trains or 215 cars was built for the RER A line.
