Alec Benjamin

Alec Shane Benjamin (born May 28, 1994)[3] is an American singer-songwriter from Phoenix, Arizona.[3] He has gained popularity from his pop songs that depict descriptive stories from his own personal experiences. He also gained much attention from his demos. In addition to his solo project, Benjamin has found success in songwriting with artists such as Jon Bellion, including a songwriting credit on the track "New York Soul (Part II)" from Bellion's album The Human Condition.[4] He is heavily influenced by artists such as Eminem, John Mayer, Paul Simon and Ben Gibbard.[5] In 2019, he recorded two singles with Spotify Studios NYC, one of which was a cover of Eminem's "Stan."[6]

Initially, Alec Benjamin signed to Columbia Records, while still being enrolled at USC.[7] However, Columbia Records then ended their partnership before he was able to submit his album.[8] Despite this, he used other methods to gain a following: he performed his songs in parking lots outside Shawn Mendes and Troye Sivan concerts and handed out business cards to promote his work.[8] He is considered to be a self-made artist.[9]

Benjamin's mixtape Narrated For You reached number 127 on the US Billboard 200 in 2019. The mixtape features the songs "Water Fountain" and "Let Me Down Slowly", which was released as a single with Alessia Cara. In the first week, when his song "Let Me Down Slowly" came out, it gained over 2 million streams and has over 594 million streams as of June 2020.[9] He made his US television debut when he performed his US platinum single, "Let Me Down Slowly" on The Late Late Show with James Corden on January 8, 2019. In his mixtape he tells stories of love, friendship, and growing up.

Benjamin's song "I Built a Friend" was used as backing material for a contemporary dance audition of contestant Merrick Hanna, on episode 1 of the 12th season of America's Got Talent (May 30, 2017). Benjamin has created "Can I Sing For You?" videos on YouTube in which he performs his written songs in acoustic to people in public.
