Grievance studies affair

In October 2018 it was revealed the journal had accepted for publication a hoax article entitled "Our Struggle Is My Struggle: Solidarity Feminism as an Intersectional Reply to Neoliberal and Choice Feminism." It was later reported that the manuscript included edited sections from Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf, amounting to plagiarism since the authors did not attribute the paraphrased sections to Hitler. The accepted manuscript does not include any form of anti-Semitic language or references to anti-Semitism. The authors of the manuscript claim that the last two thirds of this paper is based upon a rewriting of Chapter 12 of Mein Kampf. Authors partially reproduced the part, in which Hitler describes why the Nazi party is needed and what it requires of its members. Changes included replacement of references to "national-socialism" with "feminism" and "Jews" with "privilege". The submission of the paper was an attempt to show the lack of rigor in academia, so-called "grievance studies" by demonstrating that absurdities and morally fashionable political ideas could get published as legitimate academic research in the field.[2][3][4]

This hoax paper was one of many the authors submitted to critical race and gender journals, in an attempt to expose a lack of scholastic rigor in the peer review process of such journals.[5][6] All papers were submitted under false pretense and without having gone through the required University Institutional Review Board for approval.[7][8] The authors have received criticism and face disciplinary proceedings for academic misconduct, falsification of data, plagiarism, and ethical violations[9][10] of the rights of human subjects in research. However, a number of prominent academics, including Richard Dawkins and Steven Pinker, have defended the writers of the hoax paper.[11] Pinker stated that any disciplinary action toward the writers would amount to "an attempt to weaponise an important principle of academic ethics to punish a scholar for expressing an unpopular opinion."[11]
