Adrian V. S. Hill

Adrian Vivian Sinton Hill (born 1958)[2] FMedSci FRCP is a vaccinologist, director of the Jenner Institute, Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Oxford, Consultant Physician and Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford.[3][4] Hill is jointly leading in research to produce a vaccine for COVID-19 along with Professor Andrew Pollard of the Oxford Vaccine Group.

Early life and education

Hill was educated at Belvedere College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin and the University of Oxford where he was awarded Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1986[5] for research on thalassemia supervised by John B. Clegg.[3][6]

Career and research

During his time at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics his research group studied genetic susceptibility to infections such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV. He is now developing vaccines which produce cellular (T-cell) immunity using Adenovirus and Modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) viral vector vaccines in a prime-boost regime.[7] His group has developed vaccines against malaria which were tested in clinical trials.[8] In 2014 he led a clinical trial of an Ebola vaccine (cAd3-ZEBOV) in response to the West African Ebola virus epidemic.[7][9][10] In 2014 Adrian was appointed a director of Vaccitech, an Oxford University spin-off.[11]

Hill has two children with his former wife, Sunetra Gupta.[2][14]
