Laroui is considered one of the leading Arab philosophers since the 1960s. His philosophical project has been expressed in books on historicity, history, ideology, liberty, and reason. He has influenced a generation of scholars since his appearance on the Arab intellectual scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with a famous first text on modern Arab ideology.
Born in Azemmour, Laroui taught at the University Mohammed V in Rabat until 2000. He has also written five novels (o.a. L'Exil (Sindbad-Actes Sud, 1998)).[3]
