AKT InMotion

AKT InMotion is a New York City-based fitness company rooted in the functional training technique developed by international fitness expert, Anna Kaiser. Founded in 2013, the AKT program consists of a mixture of circuit training, HIIT, strength, toning, dance cardio, Pilates and yoga.

History

With a following that includes celebrities such as Drew Barrymore, Karlie Kloss, and Shakira, the AKTechnique consists of a wide range of classes, from circuit training to full-on dance cardio.[1][2][3] Kelly Ripa cites the AKTechnique as her favorite workout: "I love working out with Anna Kaiser. She doesn’t just tell you what to do; she does it with you. All of the trainers there do. The entire program is not someone standing over you saying ten more, five more, three more. There’s something about this pack mentality that appeals to me. I like a group of women working out together, sweating together. It’s empowering.”[4]

Classes

Classes run from an hour to seventy-five minutes and change content every two to four weeks in order to keep the body from plateauing.[5]

There are eight types of classes, for a range of fitness levels:[6]

  • AKTease (60 minutes): This dance-based interval class is designed for anyone who is new to AKT. Combining dance cardio, strength, and flexibility, it provides an introduction to the AKTechnique.
  • Happy Hour (60 minutes): As AKT’s signature dance-based interval class, Happy Hour is perfect for any level. It alternates between choreographed combinations of dance cardio, toning, and dynamic flexibility sections.
  • 4Play (60 minutes): This class is exactly what it sounds like: 4 exercises and 4 circuits. It involves HIIT intervals, function strength training, and dynamic stretching.
  • Sweat Dream (60 minutes): Sweat Dream is a circuit-based interval class that takes places around a box and with a set of overhead resistance bands. The class alternates between timed strength intervals using weights and a series of cardio moves using the overhead resistance bands.
  • AKTone (60 minutes): This class involves forty-five minutes of non-impact, Pilates and barre-like strength and toning exercises and finishes with fifteen minutes of foam rolling.
  • S&M (60-75 minutes): This class is for advanced members only, who have been part of the AKT family for over sixty days. S&M is a dance-based interval workout that incorporates content and choreography from the previous months.
  • One Night Stand (60 minutes): This class is completely cardio-based, where clients learn past AKT choreography to prepare for S&M.
  • AKT Mixer (60 minutes): This class combines exercises from four of AKT's classes: Sweat Dream, Happy Hour, 4Play, and Tone.

Services and market

Calling itself a “360-degree lifestyle brand,” AKT InMotion offers classes, private training, sessions with a staff nutritionist, Transformation Programs, On Demand streaming, retreats, intensives, pre- and pos-natal programs, and a clothing line.[5] Clients can pay for classes by using a drop-in pay method or by buying a membership.[7] In addition, streaming memberships are available for on-the-go workouts, as well as DVDs of classes and a YouTube channel that boasts free tutorials of specialized exercises.[8]

With a flagship location on the Upper East Side, the fitness company now has studios in NoMad, LA, Connecticut, and East Hampton.
