83 (film)

83 is an upcoming Indian sports drama film directed by Kabir Khan and jointly produced by Khan, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Deepika Padukone and Sajid Nadiadwala.[2] Co-distributed by Reliance Entertainment,[3] the film stars Ranveer Singh as cricketer Kapil Dev, along with Deepika Padukone, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Nishant Dahiya, Sahil Khattar and Amrita Puri.

In September 2017, Reliance Entertainment and Vibri Media hosted an event to announce the film with the team that had won the 1983 World Cup. The shooting began on 5 June 2019 in England.[4] Although it was scheduled for theatrical release on 10 April 2020, the release has been postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.[5]

Production

Casting

Reliance Entertainment and Vibri Media hosted an event in September 2017 to announce the film along with the entire former team that won the Cricket World Cup in 1983.[23] The cast and their roles were announced in February 2019.[24][17] Amiya Dev, the daughter of Kapil Dev, joined as an assistant to the director, Kabir Khan.[25] Mali Marshall was cast to play his father, West Indies fast bowler Malcolm Marshall.[26] Composer Pritam joined to create an iconic anthem for the film.[27] Deepika Padukone joined the cast as Kapil Dev's wife, Romi Bhatia, while also co-producing the film.[6] Tamil actor Jiiva was signed to play Krishnamachari Srikkanth, marking his Hindi debut.[28]

Training

In the first week of April 2019 at a camp at Dharamshala Cricket Stadium, the cast trained at cricket with former cricketers Balwinder Sandhu and Yashpal Sharma.[29] Singh was learning the game from Dev before the start of shooting in June.[30]

Filming

Director Kabir Khan announced that the major shooting of the film would start in England in May 2019.[31] The cast of '83 flew to London on 28 May.[32] Principal photography began on 5 June at locations in Glasgow, Dulwich college in London, Edinburgh cricket club, Nevill Ground at Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent and The Oval cricket ground. Khan stated, "Now that it's going on the floors, starting with the Glasgow schedule, everyone's excited to recreate a journey that made history, all thanks to our cricketing heroes of the '83 team."[33] In mid-June, Deepika Padukone joined film team in Glasgow for her part of shooting.[34] The three-month schedule of the film in London was finished on 1 September. Padukone finished her portion of shooting in mid-September.[35][36] The filming was completed on 7 October 2019.[37]

Release

The release of the film was initially announced for 5 April 2019, and was later postponed to 30 August 2019.[38] The release date was postponed to 10 April 2020 due to delays in pre-production. Although it was scheduled for theatrical release on 10 April 2020, the release has been postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. The film is now expected to hit screens on India's Independence Day 2020. However, there were speculations that the film will be released on some big OTT platforms, but recently, Shibash Sarkar (Group CEO of Reliance Entertainment) announced that there are no plans to release it on the OTT platforms.[39]

Marketing

The title logo was released on 9 January 2020,[40] and the character posters of the film released every day starting from 11 January 2020.[24] The first look launch was held on 25 January 2020, at Sathyam Cinemas in Chennai, where the makers unveiled first look posters of original Hindi and the dubbed Tamil and Telugu versions.[41][42]

The official trailer of the film was set to be released by Reliance Entertainment on 11 March but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Distribution

Kamal Haasan and Akkineni Nagarjuna bankrolled the Tamil and Telugu rights of the film, under their Raaj Kamal Films International and Annapurna Studios banner,[43][44] and the distribution rights of the former was acquired by YNOT X and the latter by Global Cinemas.[45][46]
