The defending champions were Leeds Rhinos who beat Castleford Tigers 20–12 in the 2019 Grand Final on 11 October 2019.[1]

For 2020, the number of teams was expanded from eight to ten, with the addition of Huddersfield Giants and Warrington Wolves to the league.[2]

The format of the league has changed. The first nine rounds will see each team play each other once. After nine rounds the top four teams will split off to play six further rounds (the play-offs) where each team will play the other both home and away. After those play-offs the top two teams will compete in the Grand Final.[3] The bottom six teams after nine rounds will compete for the Super League Shield. Each will play each of the other teams once with the top four after these six rounds meeting in the Shield semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will meet in the Shield final.[3] In both the play-offs and the shield points earned in the first nine games are carried forward to the later part of the season.[3]

The Grand Final and the Shield final will be played as a double-header at Emerald Headingley, Leeds on 11 October 2020.[4]
