500 cc race report

Mick Doohan back on a motorcycle after his crash at Assen, and one week after being able to walk. He still leads the standings by 22 points; he qualifies 14th.

Riders were concerned about the track surface and bumpiness. According to Michael Scott, Wayne Rainey, Eddie Lawson and Doohan were against racing (which would have decided the championship for Doohan), but the race went on anyway.[1]

John Kocinski on pole, then Rainey, Wayne Gardner and Kevin Schwantz. Rainey gets the start from Kocinski and Schwantz.

Rainey got a gap to a 4-way fight for 2nd between Schwantz, Doug Chandler, Kocinski and Gardner.

Kocinski pulled a perfect late-braking pass to move from 4th to 2nd. Gardner quickly goes back to 6th.

Winning the race put Rainey 2 points behind Doohan. The points system in this season only recognizes the top 10, so Doohan’s 12th place gets him 0 points.

This Brazilian Grand Prix was the last race of Randy Mamola.
