First-seeded Vitas Gerulaitis defeated John Lloyd 6–3, 7–6, 5–7, 3–6, 6–2 in the final to win the Men's Singles tennis title at the December, 1977 Australian Open. Roscoe Tanner was the defending champion, but was upset in the first round by Chris Lewis.
