Yisroel Schulman

Yisroel Schulman, Esq. was the President & Attorney-in-Charge of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. Prior to his inception of NYLAG, Mr. Schulman was a faculty member at the Benjamin N. Cardozo Law School of Yeshiva University. Concurrently, Mr. Schulman served as the Supervising Attorney for Cardozo Bet Tzedek Legal Services. Mr. Schulman lectured on legal issues affecting New Yorkers and his work appears publications including a study titled, "An Examination of the Origins and Strategies of Influence of Interest Groups." Mr. Schulman was the President of NYLAG from its founding in 1990 until 2015.

In August, 2016, after a 23 month federal investigation into the operations of NYLAG and Mr. Schulman's financial management of NYLAG from 1996 through 2012, the federal government stated they found no evidence of criminal wrong doing and formally closed their investigation. Mr. Schulman was represented by Paul Shechtman (Bracewell).

In November, 2017, the New York State Office of the Attorney General amicably settled its civil inquiry into NYLAG and Mr. Schulman. The settlement cleared Mr. Schulman from initial allegations that Mr. Schulman owed any monies to NYLAG or any other charities or received any monies from charities which he was not lawfully owed. Mr. Schulman was represented by Hal Lieberman and Andy Celli (Emery Celli Brinckerhoff & Abady).
