Ex Girlfriend was an American girl group whose line-up comprised Monica Boyd, Julia Robertson, Stacy Francis, and Tisha Hunter. Formed in 1989 in Brooklyn, New York by new jack swing group Full Force, the members adopted the surname "X" as part of their dynamic. They were signed to Reprise Records in 1990. Ex Girlfriend was launched into mainstream recognition following the 1991 release of their debut album, X Marks the Spot, which contained the singles "Why Can't You Come Home" and "You (You're the One for Me)". Following the release of their second album It's a Woman Thang, the group disbanded in 1994. In 2008, the group briefly reformed. "Why Can't You Come Home" incorporates a melody from one of the Thomas the Tank Engine theme tunes.

Group history

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, the group comprised Stacy Francis, Monica Boyd, Julia Robertson, and Tisha Hunter, who all adopted the surname 'X' as part of a group concept of "female militarism".[1][2] They were signed via Full Force's Forceful Records to Reprise Records and released two studio albums (X Marks the Spot and It's a Woman Thang) before disbanding in 1994.[1]

In 1989, they performed background vocals for Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam on the song "Just Git It Together" and in 1990, they sang on Jasmine Guy's debut single "Try Me". In 1991, they released "Why Can't You Come Home", the first single from their debut album. The single went on to become a Top 5 hit on the Billboard R&B chart and peaked at number 78 on the Hot 100 singles chart. The second single released from their debut album was titled "You (You're the One for Me)", followed by the radio singles "With All My Heart" and "What I Would Do to You". They also contributed background vocals to Cheryl Pepsii Riley's hit 1991 single "Ain't No Way".[1] After a three-year hiatus, Ex Girlfriend returned in 1994 with the single "X In Your Sex", from their second album.[2] The album was regarded by critics as an improvement on their debut,[3][4] but had little to no commercial success. The group disbanded in the same year.

As of July 2008 the members of Ex Girlfriend decided to reunite.

In May 2016, Julia Robertson released a duet with singer-songwriter Norm Adams entitled "Body Rush". The song earned them a preliminary ballot Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
