German Thomas Niendorf founded the Vancouver Whitecaps' Residency program in 2008 as director and head coach. At the peak of British Columbia's elite soccer pyramid is the no-fee Whitecaps' Residency program. Players selected for the residency team(three age groups) and attend schools throughout Vancouver. Local players don't have to move while players from the clubs regional academy centres have to live with a billet family or have a parent move out with them. Players involved in their regional academies are charged a fee. All academy teams play in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy

History

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy was founded in 2007 as part of the development system for the Vancouver Whitecaps USL First Division franchise with two developmental teams (Vancouver Whitecaps Residency, in the USL Premier Development League, the Whitecaps FC Prospects, in the Pacific Coast Soccer League) and the women's team (Vancouver Whitecaps Women, in the USL W-League). The Academy runs fully funded Residency player development program. The Whitecaps' residency program uses the three-storey, 38,000-square-foot field house at the University of B.C. There are around 200 players and coaches.(, U-15, U-16/17, and U18/19)
