The Men's Lightweight Weightlifting Event (75 kg) was the fifth lightest men's event at the weightlifting competition, limiting competitors to a maximum of 75 kilograms of body mass. Each weightlifter had three attempts for both the snatch and clean and jerk lifting methods. The total of the best successful lift of each method was used to determine the final rankings and medal winners.

Competition took place on August 2 in the 4,500 capacity Albert Gersten Pavilion.

Due to the 1984 Summer Olympics boycott, the competition did not feature the winner of the previous year's World Championships, Aleksandar Varbanov. He and many others decided to compete at the Friendship Games instead, an event which was won with a world record total of 377.5 kilograms, 37.5 more than was needed for the Olympic gold medal.[1]
