The Vincennes Velvets were a Class D minor league baseball team based in Vincennes, Indiana, that began when the Belleville Stags franchise relocated following the 1949 season. The Velvets were members of the Mississippi–Ohio Valley League, predecessor to today's Midwest League. The franchise disbanded after the 1952 Season as the Velvets moved to Canton, Illinois, during the 1952 season.[1][2]

History

The Belleville Stags moved to Vincennes following the 1949 season. The franchise then moved to Canton on June 7, 1952, and became the Canton Citizens. The Velvets were affiliates of the St. Louis Browns in 1950 before operating as an independent franchise with no major league franchise affiliation from 1951 to 1952. The team is also listed as being called the "Citizens" in some references, with the name change occurring when a sponsor of the team was Champagne Velvet Beer.[3][4][5]

The ballpark

The Citizens played at Nehi Park.[6] The park was located at 13th and Willow Streets, behind the Nehi Bottling Works.[7][8]
