Variar
Variyar/ Warrier is a South Indian, Hindu caste of the Ambalavasi (temple-personnel) community from Kerala, India. They are engaged to assist the Nambudiri priests in temple-related chores, primarily catering to the floral requirements and daily maintenance of the temple. This surname is not related to Varrier, a Kashmiri Muslim surname, or the English name 'Warrior'
Kerala, was having little bit a complex type of castism instead of just 4 level casteism seen in other parts. According to Jati-nirnaya, variyars were originally Brahmins, who were degraded during the Treta-yuga, and they belong to the group of ambalavasis called bharatabhattaraka.Their position is considered to be between Brahmins and kshatriya's.This is the only community which name itself as descendants of kailas gotra. An important event in their life is shivdiksha.As per the "Saaraswatha sooktam" of rigveda, variam was the sacred place were the temple valuable belonging to god were kept and variar was the custodian and owner administrator . A variar was a manager of the temple who worked as a selfless devotee and in return expected only portion of daily nivedyam.
There is a mythological legend which suggests that Lord Shiva, who was in the Ardhanarieswara form, took two ribs, one of his side and the other of Parasakthi's side, and created a Warrier couple, to support the priest and manage the temple activities. Warriers are believed to be Shaivites, but there is no proof for this, since they worship all Hindu deities, including Vishnu and his avatars, and even name after them - Like Krishna Warrier (N. V. Krishna Warrier for example) and Rama Warrier (P. V. Rama Warrier for example).
