Norm Conrad, who taught social studies at the school for more than 20 years before moving on to promote project-based learning at the Lowell Milken Education Center in Fort Scott, Kansas,[2] together with his students at Uniontown, helped raise the profile of World War II hero Irena Sendler in the U.S.[3] In 1999, Conard produced a play called Life in a Jar at the school, based on research into her life story. The play was a hit and was staged over 200 times in the United States and abroad.[4] In March 2002, B’nai Jehudah Temple of Kansas City presented Sendler, Conrad, and the students who produced the play with its annual award "for contributions made to saving the world" (Tikkun olam award). The play was adapted for television as The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler (2009), and directed by John Kent Harrison, in which Sendler was portrayed by actress Anna Paquin.[5][6]
