Tong Bing Yu (Chinese: 童冰玉; pinyin: Tóng Bīngyù), born on 14 June 1983, is a Mediacorp actress, who is based in Singapore. She was prominently a full-time Mediacorp artiste from 2006 to 2017.

Profile

Malaysian artiste Tong Bing Yu’s first encounter with the entertainment industry is when she took part in Malaysia Chinese Cosmos International 2006, in which she won along with two other subtitles (Miss Personality and Miss Perfect Skin). She later went on to represent Malaysia to take part in the finals, competing with regional beauties. She successfully took the Miss Culture Personality title. These titles not only comes as a surprise to her, but also changed her life from then on.

Having a passion in acting, she starts her acting career in 2008. She landed into her first lead role in 2009, her second year in the acting scene. As of today, she has been continuously approached by many productions, both local and overseas, as main leads, and successfully participated in many dramas. Among them, one of her most well-accepted roles is in MediaCorp Singapore’s blockbuster, "The Journey: A Voyage", a series which recounts the travails of first-generation Chinese immigrants who set foot on the island of Singapore to seek their fortunes and future. This role differs from her previous modern, professional-imaged roles, and to which she successfully got her first nomination as Best Actress in Star Awards 2014.

This is just after a short 6 years in her acting career, and 4 years in the Singapore television scene. In the same year, she won her first award — Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes in the Star Awards 2014 Singapore and also Most Popular Actress in Malaysia’s Golden Awards, proving her popularity among audiences in both countries. These awards have also made her the first female artiste who achieved both Malaysian and Singaporean awards.

Although she is well acknowledged for her acting skills in the television scene, Tong pushed herself for improvements and in the past few years, when Malaysia’s movie industry blooms, she was invited for her first big screen participation. Her roles in the big screen included a warrior, killer, mischievous night market hawker and many more. Regardless if it is a small or huge production, or if the role is main or side, to her, every acting opportunity is a self-improvement and also a contribution to the Chinese Entertainment industry.

As Malaysian movies are being noticed by the overseas market, in 2013, Tong was invited to participate in overseas productions, including movies from Hong Kong and Mainland China, namely "Kick Ass Girls", Special Female Force and "League of Legend". In 2015, she was even invited by Mainland China as the female lead in their very first martial arts short film, to which she also sang the theme song.

Being contributing to charity in low-profile since her pageant period, Tong won her first non-acting award in November 2014. Her long-term charity contributions are being acknowledged by the “Malaysia’s Top Ten Outstanding Youth” organizers and gained her an award which acknowledges this. This achievement was greatly reported in both Malaysia and Singapore media, showing her status in the entertainment industry of both countries.

In 2015, she won her first global awards, being the Outstanding Female Artiste in the McMillan Woods Global Awards.

Tong can be described as Malaysia’s whole-rounded artiste, which besides acting, she also gets involves in hosting or singing. She is now in high demand for Malaysian and Singaporean dramas. Her positive and healthy image also causes her to be constantly approached by many brands for ambassadorship or image ambassador. The brands ranged from supplements, skincare products, sports brands, slimming products and many more.

Tong is working her way in the international scenes (including a short film in China and movie alongside Leon lai) and achieving new milestones along the way. She has a Fan Club called Tong Bing Yu Fans Club.

In 2018, Tong Bing Yu left Mediacorp as a full-time artiste. Mediacorp has extended her contract until the end of February, in hopes of convincing Tong to stay. However, it would appear that Tong has already made up her mind. Her last drama with Mediacorp was Mightiest Mother-in-Law. In an interview with Lianhe Wanbao, she said that she is unwilling to lose to the “game”, the “system” and lose to the way of “being human”.

She has also revealed that the current condition of the TV industry in Singapore is one of the many reasons why she has decided to leave Mediacorp. According to Tong, the reason why she came to Singapore from Malaysia was because she wanted to be an actress. The 34-year-old, who looks like a 24-year-old, started her acting journey from 2008 in Malaysia. However, after 7 years in Singapore, she has realized that what Mediacorp truly needs isn’t actors and actresses.
