Thiolyte

Thiolyte is a brand name for electrical insulating thermoset phenolic laminate materials.

These industrial thermoset laminates are generally stronger than thermoplastic materials at elevated temperatures up to 130 °C (266 °F). Thermoset materials cannot be easily recycled because they do not melt, and therefore cannot be re-moulded.

A hard, dense engineering plastic manufactured by applying heat and pressure to layers of resin-impregnated paper sheet or cotton fabric. During the heat and pressure process polymerization occurs and this transforms the layers into a high-pressure thermoset laminate.

Sheets of material measuring up to 8000 mm long can be produced however most popular sheet size demand is for 1220 mm x 1220 mm and 2440 mm x 1220 mm. The available thickness range is from 0.4 mm to 100 mm with greater thickness material availability up to 160 mm (material type dependent) on request. A range of different Thiolyte grades are available depending on the specific electrical / mechanical performance requirements.

Epoxy resin, silicone resin, melamine resin and modified polymerbased materials with paper, cotton fabric, glass fabric, carbon fibre and other reinforcements are also produced from Stage-B "pre-preg" laminate core material.

Contract production of high-tech composite laminates, honeycomb composite laminates and a range of decorative laminates to the required specification levels are available.

Grading

  • Paper-based Phenolic laminates conforming to NEMA grades X, XX, XXX and XXXPC.
  • Cotton-based Phenolic laminates (canvas and linen) conforming to NEMA grades C/CE and L/LE.
  • Glass-based laminates of Epoxy (NEMA G10 and NEMA G11), Melamine (NEMA G5) and Silicone (NEMA G7).
  • Based on graphite impregnated cotton. Phenolic laminates are manufactured to suit end-user requirements.

Standards

Thiolyte Phenolic Laminates conform to the following standards:

  • British Standards (BS)
  • German Standards (DIN)
  • European Standards (IEC)
  • South African SABS 1100
  • South African TRANSNET

Manufacturer

The Thiolyte-branded range of materials are manufactured under license from the company Insulectric in South Africa by Isolants Victor Hallet in Belgium and Isolants Hallet Shanghai in China. No other manufacturer is licensed to manufacture Thiolyte.
