The Texas Mile is a land speed auto racing event in Victoria, Texas at the Victoria Regional Airport. Participants, amateur and professional alike, from across the globe test their fastest standing 1-Mile speeds in a wide range of vehicles.[1] The bi-annual 3 day motorsports event takes place the last weekend of March and October.[2]

History

The first Texas Mile event was in October 2003 in Goliad, Texas with 35 participants and relatively no spectators. The event was co-founded by Jay Matus and his wife, Shannon Matus under J&S Matus Motorsports, Inc. Today, The Texas Mile sells out within hours of opening registration, filling all 220 coveted spots to participate and welcomes thousands of spectators from across the world. The event remained in Goliad, Texas until March 2011 and then relocated to Chase Field Industrial Complex in Beeville, Texas. In 2017, The Texas Mile relocated to its new "home" at the Victoria Regional Airport in Victoria, Texas.

Over 250 sports cars, motorcycles, trucks and concept race cars participate in the standing 1-Mile event on an airport runway strip with 1/2 Mile to shutdown.[3] Participants come from all over the United States, Finland, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Canada, etc.

The current Texas Mile record is held by M2K Motorsports' 2006 Ford GT, driven by Patrick O'Gorman, clocking in at 293.6 MPH. The record-setting speed was achieved during the March 2017 Texas Mile event.[4]

An important milestone for electric vehicles was reached at the Texas Mile when Mitch Medford drove his 800 horsepower 1968 Mustang fastback, the Zombie 222, to an electric vehicle speed record of 178 mph in March of 2015. As of October 2016, the Zombie 222 also holds the record as the world's fastest-accelerating road car with a 0-60 mph time of 1.79 seconds.
