Students' Federation of India
The Students' Federation of India (SFI) is the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).[1][2]
Introduction
Students' Federation of India stands for the establishment of a progressive, democratic and egalitarian education system which will ensure social justice and intellectual self reliance. It strives to achieve this by uniting the entire Indian student community towards the cause of a universal and free public education system ensuring education for all. SFI stands for the advancement of India towards a socialistic pattern of society, ensuring social and economic equality and a life of dignity and prosperity to all.Hence it raises the slogan, 'Independence, Democracy, Socialism'.
Since its formation in 1970, SFI has undertaken issues that are of concern to the student community and has worked with the progressive sections for creation of an egalitarian society.
History
The organization was formed when students assembled in Calcutta and decided to form a new organization for the purpose of bringing students from across the country together.[3] The student leaders originally intended to lead discussions on issues including radical education reform, employment, safeguarding, and the expansion of democratic rights.
The Students' Federation of India now leads the student unions of universities in Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Odisha, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.[4][5] It is one of the largest student organisation in India with a membership of 4,300,405 as of 2014 - 2015. [6]
Flag
The SFI's flag has a red five-pointed, socialist-style star in the top left corners, on a white background and the words "Independence", "Democracy" and "Socialism" are written, in English or in a local language, one beneath the other, at the bottom right of the flag, also in red. The ratio of length and breadth of the flag is 3:2.[7] The flag is designed to symbolize what the SFI considers the keys to harmony.
