Structure of the Austrian Armed Forces

The current structure of the Austrian Armed Forces is as follows:

Ministry of Defence and Sports

The Austrian Armed Forces are administered by the Ministry of Defence and Sports located in Vienna. The Ministry controls the following entities:

Chief of the General Staff

The office of the Chief of the General Staff commands the four operational commands of the Austrian Armed Forces and the Austrian Special Forces:

Land Forces Command

The Rapid Missions Command is tasked with fighting terrorism nationally and internationally. The Mountain Warfare Command will become a European Training Center specializing in training and developing European mountain combat units. The 4th Mechanized Brigade is deployable nationally and internationally for territorial defense missions. The 7th brigade is Austria's premier peacekeeping unit for out of area missions. The nine territorial commands are tasked with the defense of their regions and the support of the civilian authorities in times of crisis.

The 17th, 19th and 33rd infantry battalions field each a staff company and three infantry companies and rely on wheeled armored vehicles for transport. The 24th, 25th and 26th infantry battalions field each a staff company, three infantry companies and a combat support company with heavy mortars and anti-tank missiles (note: the 25th only fields two airborne infantry companies). The 1st, 6th, 7th, 8th, 12th, 15th, 18th and 23rd infantry battalion of the territorial commands are active battalions and field a staff company and three infantry companies each, while the reserve infantry battalions field a staff company and four infantry companies each. The Guard Battalion fields one staff and four foot guard companies and the Guards Battalion Band.

The two mechanized infantry battalions field each a staff company and three mechanized infantry companies. The single tank battalion fields a staff company and three tank companies. The two reconnaissance and artillery battalions field each a staff company, two reconnaissance companies and two artillery batteries. The sole reconnaissance battalion fields a staff company and three reconnaissance companies. The three engineer battalions each field a staff company, a technical company and three combat engineer companies. The three staff battalions field a staff company, a command support (Signal) company, a supply and transport company, a maintenance company and a training company.
