St. Xavier's Pre-University College, Gulbarga, is a Jesuit school opened in 2010 north of Simoor, in Karnataka, India. It offers plus-two courses in Science, Commerce, and Arts.[3] It also offers coaching for NEET, IIT, and CET entrance examinations and for entrance to engineering colleges.[4]

History

Xavier’s is located on a 10-acre, treed, rural plot about a mile north of Sirnoor Forest Department Nursery and township.

It was founded by the Society of Jesus at the request of Most Rev. Robert Miranda, Bishop of Gulbarga, and opened on 6 June 2010 with 37 Science students. Commerce and Arts were added the following year. By 2015 it had grown to an enrollment of 300 students, boys and girls. The hostels accommodate 150 girls (with 4 staff members doubling as mentors) and 100 boys. The school runs a bus for day scholars.[5]

Values

The College’s motto is Knowledge and Light. It pursues the Jesuit goal of educating "Men and women for others."[6] The admission policy favors those from the poorer, farming communities, and substantial fee concessions and scholarships are available. A prayer room is prominently situated on campus which those of all faiths visit during the day.[5]

Programs

There is a large field for games and two basketball courts where state-level tournaments have been held. Club activities include debate, fine arts, ecology, and AICUF, as well as talents days and college days where student talents are on display.

CET/IIT coaching is provided on week-ends, and also in the regular classes. Those who speak Kannada are trained through a few months of "Yuva English". Graduates often pursue careers in medicine, engineering, and management.[5]

Commerce: economics, business studies, accountancy, and history or computer science

Arts: history, economics, political science, and sociology or education[7]

St Xavier's PU College, Gulbarga, secured a 100% result in its first batch of Arts and of Commerce in 2012.[8] From 2013 through 2015 results were 100% in Arts and Commerce and 96% in Science.[5]
