St. Xavier's High School, Suryapet, in Telangana, India, was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1976 as a Telugu-medium school. In 2005 an English-medium school was added, both for male students.

History

Rt. Rev. Alphonso Beretta, Bishop of Warangal, welcomed the Jesuits to begin a school in his diocese. It was envisioned as a means of fostering vocations to the priesthood among the Telugu people, while offering a Catholic education in the area.

St. Xavier's High school is located in a rural area on a 32-acre, partly forested plot, five kilometers from Suryapet on the way to Jangaom, Nalgonda District, Telangana, in what came to be called Loyola Town. Until 2014 Telangana was a part of Andhra Pradesh, but has since become a separate state.

With help from local men in building the school,[1] Xavier opened July 1976 with three classes (6th, 7th, 8th) and 117 boys and in three years became a full-fledged high school preparing for the Secondary School Certificate, with Telugu the medium of instruction. In 2005 an English-medium school would be added. Students were generally the first generation of their family to receive a formal education. There is a boys hostel, and several buses to collect the students for school The school from the start has been a source of vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Five Jesuits on the staff are generally in administrative positions, also running a retreat ministry.[2][3]

Activities

Activities include table tennis, football, basketball, and participation in Jesuit Inter School Tournaments, as at Loyola High School, Vinukonda, Guntur District.[4]

Graduates have distinguished themselves in areas such as computer software.[5]
